It's not because Bash was more loved than the others, but I think because of the cumulative heartbreak of losing all three boys this year. Bash was seven years, four months - an old ferret as most pass in their seventh year. That said - I was not prepared. The afternoon of September 15th was an ordinary day. I had gone in to their room to tidy up and see them all (something that happens three or four times a day) and I had my hands on all three ferrets, including Bash. He was fine acting like his mellow, affectionate self. He ate, went potty, and 'helped' with chores. When I went in later that evening to check on everyone before bed I found he had passed, curled up in one of his favorite blankets in his comfy sleeping position. The fact that he went quickly is a blessing and I know that, but it doesn't make it any easier on my heart.</p><p><br /></p><p>Bash was litter mates with Fiona. He was our largest ferret but he was a gentle giant. He loved to play with toys and had several stashes in his room. He came along shortly after the very unexpected loss of a very young ferret, Finn, to a congenital issue. Bash helped heal my heart back then for sure.</p><p><br /></p><p>We named him Bash because he was so large but actually, the name ended up being perfect as he was a very shy, bashful guy. He has definitely left a void in our little zoo.</p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaEMvnK2003RuaqAybbPr7-5LMA5V4VcgSoaFy4Xltzja9QPWF44kMbOO_tcqTZzn8PT4i1nApwe2Dx9EWAJSgqnxrJceT9whGG8_AJhPTn9suVPQmtJ-dw-Da64oV7Q7PQM6YXh6tCcZK/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1173" data-original-width="1600" height="235" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaEMvnK2003RuaqAybbPr7-5LMA5V4VcgSoaFy4Xltzja9QPWF44kMbOO_tcqTZzn8PT4i1nApwe2Dx9EWAJSgqnxrJceT9whGG8_AJhPTn9suVPQmtJ-dw-Da64oV7Q7PQM6YXh6tCcZK/" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguUsIVy6sOFa_FukLaSmv_EQuCw3qt1c1Kc0IHuCqrCKGI5WSQ_olYO3z03CiXV576vlRM_5vZFStpHG4YiVRX-MreFq6eHDxdMwfd5BstnJC7zxiq39tTKvEQMkrotdVkdj_61mCj124G/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="320" data-original-width="209" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguUsIVy6sOFa_FukLaSmv_EQuCw3qt1c1Kc0IHuCqrCKGI5WSQ_olYO3z03CiXV576vlRM_5vZFStpHG4YiVRX-MreFq6eHDxdMwfd5BstnJC7zxiq39tTKvEQMkrotdVkdj_61mCj124G/" width="157" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1DzkVWT-m4mlUCTTHaXgzXf9lxGVsdUf1pJVnoQCMmMf7QJ06Tjkf-uowPp7UyGX9UfKGQQ95Ec-ecpLIx6O_ToZBApbl3lx06pmO_HA5jZi23Ju6eoq7e66phLN-2mBoza1fQq6tO1_R/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="320" data-original-width="239" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1DzkVWT-m4mlUCTTHaXgzXf9lxGVsdUf1pJVnoQCMmMf7QJ06Tjkf-uowPp7UyGX9UfKGQQ95Ec-ecpLIx6O_ToZBApbl3lx06pmO_HA5jZi23Ju6eoq7e66phLN-2mBoza1fQq6tO1_R/" width="179" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPrZ1QyU4bVSpsDS4EB4mrE2p-guZKAkyCrUoGzxdHyGPbKUN6-q2w_r9I9Zve85obAY-GzuhopMER4xAO8RKZj3lEm2wKClcoJwqiqpePP-mx31PfXaZ0RxtYnV9LpCS4Vj-ihJF-uqlb/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="320" data-original-width="315" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPrZ1QyU4bVSpsDS4EB4mrE2p-guZKAkyCrUoGzxdHyGPbKUN6-q2w_r9I9Zve85obAY-GzuhopMER4xAO8RKZj3lEm2wKClcoJwqiqpePP-mx31PfXaZ0RxtYnV9LpCS4Vj-ihJF-uqlb/" width="236" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBbIcA5O5seNHRjYqKkroMaJJ_eEHqz55N2j-3_elA4dtcU_qs7OMnjBfFBLeCz1_S_0LbNpIfwIgLk9w38-wfngWzTIS-YGNbWsMQJxxI24_dSx1DR44BrRNTcqLNjNzPjJ9eQbI3_8a9/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="936" data-original-width="1600" height="187" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBbIcA5O5seNHRjYqKkroMaJJ_eEHqz55N2j-3_elA4dtcU_qs7OMnjBfFBLeCz1_S_0LbNpIfwIgLk9w38-wfngWzTIS-YGNbWsMQJxxI24_dSx1DR44BrRNTcqLNjNzPjJ9eQbI3_8a9/" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><br />We are down to just two ferrets and these will likely be our last two for a bit at least. I am loving on them both like crazy and enjoying the time we have left.<div><br /><p></p><p>As for my sweet Bash - rest easy, little man. It has taken a few days to deal with his passing and figure out how to fill the void left by his constant presence. It was a peaceful transition for him and I was with him when he passed. For those of you following our Facebook page, you know that we have been as prepared as possible for this since early May. Since that time I have had Theo with me full time, caring for him multiple times a day. He has been hanging out in my office during the day, in the living room with the rest of family in the evenings and in his playpen in our bedroom overnight. I am so thankful for the last six weeks of intense hands on time with him.</p><p>I like to think that he enjoyed the last few weeks of his life with us. We spent lots of time together sharing cuddles. He had multiple daily visits from the dogs and each day he spent an hour or two in with his ferret siblings. We discovered he was a big fan of warm baths so each evening he would spend some time floating and swimming. It was a good six weeks.</p><p>Theo has a rich history as a part of our little zoo. He was the one who made Clooney (our first ferret) accept all his other ferret siblings. He also saved Clooney's life with a blood transfusion and kept him company in the hospital. He was the protector of all his siblings and when he was younger he absolutely LOVED squeaky toys.</p><p>Ferret lifespans are simply too short. My office felt so lonely that I brought the other in here to keep me company. It's tough to be sad with these little ones around playing and getting into everything.</p><p>Rest in peace my little man - I am so grateful you were a part of my furry family. You are loved and missed more than you could ever imagine.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6Mvrsj0oVOWOY1I8xNM-qGOYWcS1iYnJRSM5cJOxxxRX8kQtGlfRcOLdN-7NS_JvE3kM7MDTZSyf8sXmAp1viNrD2glW90QOsYcOrDdsZImHSiXE6RusMsYQMOq6eUxmQIZ-X7STa3oJE/s2048/theo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Some losses hit you harder than others, not because you love one critter more than another, but, in this case, because it was so unexpected. Almost 2 weeks ago we lost our sweet boy Kai. It was completely out of the blue - sort of. You see, I have become spoiled by the longevity and good health of our ferret children. When Violet passed at seven years and a few months, I was as prepared as I could be knowing that its tough to get a ferret to seven who is in good health, let alone one with insulinoma. Madison was one week shy of nine years old. Theo, who is currently in 'senior care' is pushing eight and a half and I am as prepared as I can be knowing he has had a very long and happy life. Kai, however was seven years and a few months. Most ferrets pass in their seventh year but I wasn't ready. It's been difficult for me to wrap my head and my heart around the fact that he simply died of old age. I can take solace in that I was able to spend time with him on his last day with me, and he was healthy and happy until his passing.</p><p>Kai was litter mates with Tabby and Harlow. He was an all boy kind of ferret who loved to play hard and show his affection with just as much enthusiasm. He was a gorgeous boy with a handsome face and lovely coloring. He loved his ferret siblings fiercely and was always affectionate with his humans. Kai loved to give kisses - but there was one rule - he had to put his little ferret nose in one of your nostrils and give kisses right between your nose and your top lip. He was also the bravest ferret we've had - finding himself stuck in places, in trouble for getting into things he shouldn't have and in the position of ring leader of all ferret shenanigans. </p><p>The remaining four ferrets are sticking pretty close to one another - they miss their brother. I am spending lots of time with them as well, showing them even more love and attention than usual. We picked up our sweet boy from the vets office last night - he is home where he belongs and missed more than he could ever imagine.</p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn55WE2ayAUPcGbjgRsc0GHl70MD0M5PIyaxawwfZWhyQCWphxuVPAMKrpJoixMAndnb5LynTxVAeG6WZYkLYdxhwpLht9kRIE_dbi17VyH1FTCdVC3_ZBJ9PCskw5Crgm52IBqqOBunCl/" style="margin-left: 1em; While her passing was not unexpected, it's taken me a few days to process. We were so fortunate to have such an extended amount of time with this sweet, joyful creature. Most ferrets pass during their 7th year, so the fact that we were able to enjoy her for so much longer is something I am so thankful for. I'm also thankful that she was a healthy girl, only suffering from adrenal disease that was basically a non-issue for her thanks to advances in veterinary medicine and an implant that kept the disease in check. Madison passed away in her sleep, in her favorite bed, sleeping in her favorite position, surrounding by her ferret and kitty siblings. I am grateful that she went peacefully and with no pain, and in these crazy COVID-19 times, that we did not have to take her in as we would not have been permitted to stay with her while they administered the necessary medications.</p><p>Madison was our second ferret. She came into our world four years after we had gotten our first, Clooney. He was very uncertain of exactly what this new critter was. I believe he thought he was a cat. Madison was a very vocal ferret and taught Clooney, who had never made a sound, that he had a voice. As our business of ferrets grew, Madison was most definitely the matriarch, accepting each new addition with open arms and loving each of them fiercely. She also had a very special relationship with our kitty Oliver and she was heartbroken when Oliver passed a couple of years ago.</p><p>She was an intuitive girl who could sense what you were feeling. There were always ferret kisses at the ready and when she was around, there was no way to be unhappy. She filled our lives with so much joy and I am so thankful she was a part of our little zoo. Rest in peace my sweet girl.</p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg295eShCQ-BQ539SNbgziW-8GaChati9laytTh9m3TBUkEaakRzk20vHqZRIU6OiFHYRbBhNgVJ5xlAYzH0u8X_RvphboSROovs2fgn2czWrOON8yPi-nVnskmZy7qK8Rhm3vuACw1uHFj/" style="margin-left: 1em; While this loss was not altogether unexpected, we are feeling at loose ends here. Violet was seven years and two months old. Getting a healthy ferret to the age of seven is sometimes a challenge and Violet had both insulinoma (a blood sugar disorder) and adrenal disease so her long life was more than we thought we would have with her.<br />
<br />
Violet was a fiercely independent little girl. Despite that, she was always so cooperative for me when it came to taking meds or eating when asked. We used food to help keep her blood sugar stable between doses of prednisone so I was with her every four to five hours for the last two plus years. There were many late night/early morning feedings, many times of worry when she wasn't doing as well as I would have liked, but mostly many days of feeling like she was happy and active and doing well in spite of her illnesses.<br />
<br />
I am thankful that her decline happened very quickly and that she only felt poorly for a matter of hours before she passed. The day before she was outside in the playspace soaking up the sun and playing with her siblings. I am also thankful that she passed peacefully in her sleep, at home, surrounded by her family.<br />
<br />
I always feel like it is such a privilege to care for them as they get older, a way for me to give back to them for all the joy and happiness they have brought into my life. Saying goodbye is always so difficult. I hope my sweet girl is at the rainbow bridge, reunited with her littermate Finn, her brother Clooney and her sister Harlow having a ferret party free of any ailments or pain. Rest in peace my lovely girl.<br />

Both of us absolutely hate the process and its stressful so I am motivated to come up with new ideas.<br />
<br />
Around Thanksgiving I started working with Winston on the first item on the list - tusk maintenance. I ordered this lovely tool called Bark and Boop Dog Nail Grinder from Amazon ($21). This is basically a Dremmel but its much quieter which we needed because W hated the loud motor of the Dremmel tool. We started our training in very short spurts. It was literally getting him to let me touch his tusk with the tool at first. It would touch for a split second and then he would pull away. He didn't like the vibration it causes but over time he got more used to it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAde_VShgQwN7-tCUdG65_LW_-T0mWRJb6oHF7Mvqn7zw-usUHbi05vdxDHY71RPsDXNVBQaR8SoVcBYfRhGcxVIoIKOHJ8o-2-5tv4Qs8FX3hK6vpFLd2Y70UKrCIg7RrwQHWXMJPmmUy/s1600/Picture1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="468" data-original-width="535" height="279" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAde_VShgQwN7-tCUdG65_LW_-T0mWRJb6oHF7Mvqn7zw-usUHbi05vdxDHY71RPsDXNVBQaR8SoVcBYfRhGcxVIoIKOHJ8o-2-5tv4Qs8FX3hK6vpFLd2Y70UKrCIg7RrwQHWXMJPmmUy/s320/Picture1.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Earlier this week, I was able to declare a win when I got out the tool and once I turned it on Winston flopped on his side (the position he takes for all maintenance activities) and he let me file for as long as I wanted. His tusks grow at very different rates - one is super long and one is just barely poking out of the side of his mouth. He lets me get both now - another win. He wasn't very excited about me accessing that shorter one at first.<br />
<br />
Now, I will say, he is a very tolerant pig when it comes to maintenance. I clean his ears, eyes, snout, brush teeth, file hooves and clean out scent glands regularly. He loves the attention. So, it was just getting him used to this new thing. I still have a ways to go, filing down the longer tusk, but once its short like the other one, it will just be a part of his regular maintenance routine and I will be able to keep them from ever getting long again. He also lets me use the tool on his hooves which makes that maintenance task much faster than filing with a nail file.<br />
<br />
So, step one in what the vet does for annual visit is off the list. I can do both myself and I don't need him flipped for trimming of hooves or using the gigli wire to cut back his tusks. Next, I am working on building him a chute - for lack of a better word. I am working on design now and have enlisted the hubs to help me construct. I will post about it once we have started the training, but, if it works like I want it to, the vet will be able to complete his physical exam and give injections without sedation or flipping. Fingers crossed.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned for updates!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6381128997918866568.post-77239713332307264052019-12-31T21:06:00.000-05:002019-12-31T21:06:11.864-05:002019 Year in ReviewSo, I did a horrible job of blogging in 2019 - I was busy with other things - writing books, working, life in general. Perhaps 2020 will be better.<br />
<br />
In 2019 we experienced some losses - our sweet Agatha kitty passed at the ripe old age of 23. She is missed greatly:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8OsrcAq4XH86DqlvwnLsFfEyItEOvxhe6s0w_mRe2nrxsyQDRQ2MFeEgJcIBtpEpBNh7bA7uWWKqkVXNh7-Rb5j__hyphenhyphen-fzWsywfsVRfulsKRyF68wcq6VSawcQW-crCWKs_0t5X8pooEK/s320/20160210_152240.jpg" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We also lost our Emma dog - she would have been 17 on her next birthday. This one is still new and difficult to think about as her passing was on the 23rd of December:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyEVOcr3TzyoKZNRbWh7kw2ZeBjZweUsHLaxs-UGBCZpr2a-OpzH0wsmcCOnBpQUf8kH_nkQZNEDSl9TWDkx3HbqldmlaWU-0M9U5lu0MpwFqXYCHHAuzg7qb4AGNBCnv995SbHllEERZJ/s1600/emma+5.JPG" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We were also fortunate to experience a somewhat status quo year for our other critters which is nothing to take for granted given that some of them are getting up there in age.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Miss Madison - our eldest ferret. She turned 8 years old this year which is quite old for a ferret. While she does have adrenal disease it is well controlled with a implant under her skin. She has a bit of hind leg weakness but it doesn't slow her down one bit. She is always first in line for a meal and is quite active and happy for a little old lady:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Theo - my eldest male ferret - he turns 7 years old on January 6. He is in exceptional health and a sweet and mellow boy. He is the patriarch of the group of ferrets, always looking after anyone who is unwell:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Violet - my lovely girl who has both adrenal and insulinoma (low blood sugar). She is on medication two times a day for the blood sugar issues and has the adrenal implant and we are quite fortunate that she has been very stable all year. We work hard to keep her blood sugar steady throughout the day (and night) and we have settled into a great routine. I hope 2020 goes as well for my girl - she also turns 7 on January 6.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Kai - my ornery boy - even at 6 years old he is a pistol. I love his enthusiastic kisses and his desperate need to try to remove your toenails. He is such fun, always ready for a wrestle or a cuddle or both. Life is an adventure with this boy around:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="No photo description available." height="320" src="https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/66227456_1567407520057173_5988141943517872128_n.jpg?_nc_cat=105&_nc_ohc=Z8us7VvPqFwAQmzVrT2wvHrNPmQtGcHcXYG2Sz2kmi-w4ECMgYOdoMjPg&_nc_ht=scontent-atl3-1.xx&oh=7dd66e9881a26d7338d309258590786c&oe=5EAF45B5" width="238" /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Tabby - my elusive and somewhat aloof girl Tabitha. She is Miss Independent - has little need for humans but is quite attached to each of her ferret siblings. Tabby is sweet and gentle but is much more geared to the critter side of life. The only exception was earlier this year when she had a bit of a respiratory bug. She wanted her mom and I was happy to oblige. Once she felt better - she was done with me:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="No photo description available." height="289" src="https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/s960x960/51502894_1448479318616661_7887669699226370048_o.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_ohc=LXJvhNblqGYAQkAlWYBkkp18Jy60XqTpo0zyEZA7bdOs8YtD52EFBRElw&_nc_ht=scontent-atl3-1.xx&oh=7a66bc577fa72c7f1900c999c7913bb4&oe=5E69326E" width="320" /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Bash - my baby boy - he is going to be five this year. Bash is a big guy but is quite shy and a bit fearful of new things and loud noises. He is very affectionate and loves to play. He is attached to his brothers and the three of them are often found cuddled up together, snoozing their days away:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="No photo description available." height="320" src="https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/74231779_1678946245569966_6613877309420077056_n.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_ohc=--xmbPAQpuwAQlnQrR6IWaQXbfF_k2WNgc6b_ErG-OeRi3-_qqRzHFbsw&_nc_ht=scontent-atl3-1.xx&oh=24a84d23159ecf2e1af9453ada55ca64&oe=5E6D21DA" width="240" /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Fiona - my youngest girl. She is the mellowest of the ferrets, loves to be held, is very affectionate and is determined to make a jail break from her area every time I enter. Fiona is always good for a kiss and is quite content to be carried around while I complete all my critterly duties:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I do adore this little group of ferrets and hope that 2020 is a great year for each of them.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Phoebe - our lone kitty. She and Aggie were not particularly close and she has adjusted well to being an only feline. Her health is good - just a touch of hyperthyroid - she has been on the same dose of the medication for years and is doing well for a kitty who will turn 15 this year.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="No photo description available." height="232" src="https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/18489656_1023711277760136_2659660387554489666_o.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_ohc=3jGT13A0M4IAQn3CeE_FyxvCkmQkFeuuSByMIcje2gTQxsLBgXVexakhA&_nc_ht=scontent-atl3-1.xx&oh=331b8a8954393776d278868dabe9bb17&oe=5EA61427" width="320" /> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Then we have the three pups. I am so thankful for them as they have distracted us from the heartbreak of losing Emma. These three keep us on our toes. We have the instigator - Charli, the protector - Tango and the pleaser - Juliett. It's fascinating how three siblings from the same litter can be so different. We love these three and can't imagine our days without them:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Image may contain: dog and outdoor" height="193" src="https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/47574055_1403519496445977_3896952453341380608_o.jpg?_nc_cat=103&_nc_ohc=ofI4y2lJVJoAQljK6WYoBkHhBQjAf3W2yIpWhPxZpyhguVJoTZYVkn3eQ&_nc_ht=scontent-atl3-1.xx&oh=6b5fde42cf0a05548cfb415708d0e158&oe=5EB01619" width="320" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And last - but most definitely not least - our Winston. He is 5 years old and such a character. He continues to mellow out as he gets older and we are fortunate that he is a pretty well behaved pig. He is constantly learning new things - his big accomplishment this year was learning to let me file his tusks with a dremel like tool (only quieter). It didn't take long for him to figure out what we were asking and while he doesn't like it much - he is good about letting me work on his tusks. He also lets me use the file on his hooves which is new as well. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Image may contain: plant, grass, outdoor and nature" height="320" src="https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/57180187_1499809583483634_6910160775021592576_n.jpg?_nc_cat=105&_nc_ohc=qLmJGaQLrHkAQlK8b74WEjZ6tOnhdU3ZPmdTYht34OGHXLogI_wlYZzjg&_nc_ht=scontent-atl3-1.xx&oh=185b2d5ea9c8b9c4fd7aef4cc97582ff&oe=5EA6C065" width="240" /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
All in all our 2019 was good - we are blessed to share our world with these amazing critters. While our hearts hurt with the loss of Aggie and Emma we were so fortunate to have had them with us for well longer than the normal kitty and pup life expectancy. I'm sure our 2020 will be filled with many more critter adventures that we can't wait to share. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Happy New Year from our Zoo Crew to you!</div>

Emma would have been seventeen on her next birthday in March. She was fortunate to have good health for the bulk of her life. It was only in the last year or so that she experienced a slow decline in her mobility due to muscle atrophy in her hind legs.<br />
<br />
She was a bright and fun loving dog who had quite the life, sharing her days with many different species and openly loving them all. She was well traveled, visiting 14 states and spending lots of time at her favorite place - the beach.<br />
<br />
Emma came to us when she was sixteen weeks old and we have enjoyed every moment of our time with her. Our hearts are broken and our household feels incomplete but we know that she is no longer shackled by the body that failed her. Our lives were made so much better because of her companionship and loyalty and she will be fondly remembered every day.<br />
<br />
We miss you, my sweet girl, and love you more than you could ever know.<br />

I am unsure as to whether it is male or female. If I had to guess I would say its a girl because its not all that big. Wylie is a good name - it could go either way.<br />
<br />
Wylie is respectful of us, never getting too close to the yard, the dogs or the pig. Whenever the humans are out he/she goes in the other direction. Its a peaceful, symbiotic relationship. If he/she could step it up on snakes and mice I would be greatly appreciative! :)<br />
<br />
The camera traps often snap some great pictures of this gorgeous creature. These were all taken between mid April and today.<br />

I had gotten up early (4:30 am) to feed Miss Violet (ferret) and at that point Aggie was fine. She ate, got some loves, gave me some purrs and found a spot to snooze on her bed. When I went in around 8:30 am I found her in her forever sleep. She was comfortable, had been basking in the sun and slipped away peacefully to the rainbow bridge. It was quick and painless and she no illnesses or aliments - I wish that for all my critters, family and friends - a long life with no issues and a peaceful passing.<br />
<br />
Aggie has been with me literally for half my life. She came to me as a three week old kitten when I was 26 years old. She has lived with me in three states, and five residences. She has survived me getting my 26 year old act together and finding my way to being an adult. She warmly accepted having a dad - my husband - and grudgingly dealt with the stream of new critters that found their way into our lives. She has known all of my critters from my first kitty Isabel to the latest addition of the three pups. While she wasn't always a fan she was a pretty go with the flow cat and always adjusted well.<br />
<br />
Aggie was incredibly healthy - I never had to take her to the vet for anything other than routine checks, shots, etc. She has never been sick or taken medication. There was no indication that yesterday was to be her last day. I think her almost 24 year old body just gave out. While we have known that this day was coming and we have tried to prepare ourselves, it doesn't really feel easier now that she's gone. Our family feels incomplete.<br />
<br />
We have been paying some extra special attention to Phoebe. She is our only kitty now and while she and Aggie weren't particularly close she is still having to adjust. Yesterday had me out of sorts for the bulk of the day. I wasn't overwrought with sadness, but more feeling an emptiness that something important is missing. It's so hard to lose your furry kids. I take comfort in the fact that Aggie had an incredibly long life. She was healthy up to the very end and she was spoiled rotten for the duration.<br />
<br />
I will miss you terribly sweet kitty girl. Thank you for a lifetime of companionship and love.<br />

I would love to get him comfortable enough with it that I could work on his fast growing tusks and when necessary on his hooves.<br />
<br />
When he was a piglet we taught him two commands that come in handy for this training. The first is <b>touch</b> which means to touch something with his snout. We started with the Dremel off and did touch several times, then turned it on and did it several more times. He doesn't love anything that makes noise (vacuum cleaner, mopper, etc) but he is motivated by cookies so he played along. The second command is <b>take</b> which means he should open his mouth and put it around whatever you are asking him to take. While I didn't actually let him take the Dremel I did want him to feel what it would be like in and around his mouth. He did very well with it both on and off.<br />
<br />
Over the next few weeks we will spend short training sessions getting familiar with the tool touching him while on and we will eventually work up to touching his tusks while its on. We have a ways to go for sure but I am optimistic with how well the first session went today.<br />

<br />
I am writing to address the rampant dumping of pets that is happening in this nation and likely all over the world. It is my humble opinion that when you get a pet it is a lifelong commitment, a promise to them that you will stick by them through good and bad, thick and thin. Sadly, I am in the minority. I fear many people find their pets are disposable and that when their life situations change its fine just to dump and run. I get it - life happens and its hard. But, quite honestly, I stand in judgement of these folks. Maybe I am the one who is wrong but I just don't get it. There is simply no circumstance that would result in me dumping one of my animals.<br />
<br />
We have cats, my husband has become more and more allergic as he has gotten older. Did we ever consider getting rid of them? No, we tried to find a solution of keeping the kitties confined to a specific part of the house so there is limited exposure for my husband. Pigs, pigs are incredibly hard. They are incredibly rewarding, but incredibly hard. Winston went through a destructive phase. Did we want to send him to the shelter? No. When he got almost four times bigger than the breeder told us he would get - again we never considered sending him away. When we got the puppies we had issues with the pig and the dogs interfacing. Get rid of the dogs or the pig? No! We worked out a solution where they never interface. Is it hard? Yes! Is it a pain in the ass? Yes? Is it my obligation to come up with solutions that keep them safe? Yes! We have a fifteen year old dog - she is ailing, she has accidents in the house, she makes me a tiny bit crazy. Am I going to dump her at a shelter? NO! I am going to care for her until her quality of life is such that we make that terrible choice to send her over the rainbow bridge or until she passes away, whichever comes first. I adopted her as a puppy, she dedicated her life to bringing our family joy and it's the least I can do for her.<br />
<br />
Having animals is an expensive, sometimes stressful endeavor. They bring so much joy but there are challenges. If you aren't willing to work through the challenges the don't get them. Think ahead. Ask yourself - 'Can I keep this (insert animal here) if I have a baby?' 'Can we take (insert animal here) if we move?' 'Can I figure out solutions to difficult behavioral problems when they arise?' 'Can I make a unbreakable promise to watch over (insert animal here) for the duration of their life - no matter what?' If you can't make a lifelong commitment - then skip it.<br />
<br />
Did you know that only 1 in 4 pigs is with their original owner? Seriously? 75% give up. Shelters and sanctuaries are bursting. And breeders, don't get me started - how about if you suspend breeding until every one if those pigs has a forever home? Did you know November is Adopt a Senior Dog month? The problem of dumping your senior dog is so bad that we now have a month dedicated to getting them adopted? Really? This is my 'pet peeve' - pun intended.<br />
<br />
Please make the right decision, think of all possible scenarios and skip adopting the critter if you aren't in for the long haul -<br />
<br />
End of rant!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6381128997918866568.post-80859411864244220732018-11-01T16:23:00.003-04:002018-11-01T16:23:52.009-04:00Happy Birthday Bash and Fiona!!I can't believe that my baby ferrets are four years old!! Time goes too fast. These two are our youngest of the bunch. Fiona is engaged, playful and affectionate. Bash is a bit shy at first but then he wants to play rough and tumble. He is all boy! I love these two crazy kids and am so thankful they are a part of our family. Happy Birthday little ones!!<br />

Emma used to be a great sport about wearing whatever we got for her. Now that she is an elderly lady - she is not so excited about the prospect. The puppies - well - they are wild children who have be photographed one at a time or else they eat each others costumes. And then there is the piglet - who is fairly cooperative but not a huge fan. Then there are the kitties and the ferrets - I gave that one up several years ago. So, this year we went simple, and cheap. Happy Halloween from the gang:<br />

I can't believe they are two years old. Here is what they looked like as babies:<br />

I had to chuckle - in addition to their cupcakes the whole gang got a pumpkin spice dog treat. I think that September 21 is the one day that Winston is happy to have canine siblings:<br />

I can't imagine our crazy household without these three - I love them to pieces! Happy Birthday Tango, Charli and Juliett!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6381128997918866568.post-23186312562652828242018-06-28T17:52:00.000-04:002018-06-28T17:52:36.500-04:00Ferret and Piggy Vet VisitYesterday's vet visit went well - 8 critters cared for in about one and a half hours - not too shabby. First off - the good news is that everyone seems pretty darn healthy. We are still waiting to hear about blood results on Kai and Winston but I am not expecting anything catastrophic in either case. We took blood on Kai to confirm his weight loss was related to coat change and not something that needs treatment and we took blood on Winston because that's what we do every year to stay on top of his health.<br />
<br />
The ferrets were very well behaved and cooperative. I have a couple of pics of Tabby, who went first. Tabs has developed a freckle on her nose. I had the vet check it out to confirm it is just a freckle and not something more scary. Thankfully - freckle confirmed!<br />
<br />
Tabby, Bash, Theo, Kai, Fiona - these guys all got vaccinations - rabies and distemper, adrenal disease prevention implants and physicals.<br />

Madison - who has active adrenal disease had already received her updated implant a few months ago, as well as her vaccines so she only had a physical.<br />
<br />
Violet had her vaccinations at one of her glucose check appointments a few months ago as well so she had a physical and got her implant updated.<br />
<br />
All in all - the state of the business is pretty darn good!<br />
<br />
Winston - ah piggy boy. The reality of it is - it's challenging to vet a pig. He screamed like a banshee when they put the meds in his snout. I don't think this was because of the medicine but more because they have to use gravity so they life his front feet off the ground and sit his butt on the floor. To say he didn't like it would be an understatement.<br />
<br />
He staggered around like a drunken piggy and then we flipped him on his back. Pigs are prey animals so this part is very scary for them instinctively. He screamed for a bit but once I talked to him and gave him loves he settled down. He was on his back for a bit - they did a blood draw, vaccinations, physical, hoof trim, tusk trim. He did pretty well and all of us involved felt like the appointment went just about as well as it could have gone. Winston spent the afternoon sleeping of his meds. The ferrets were no worse for the wear and everyone seems happy today. I am glad it's over and done with for another year.<br />
<br />
I had to chuckle. The dogs wigged out when they heard Winston screaming - seems like they might want to murder him but they don't appreciate anyone else attempting to do it for them. LOL<br />

Well - so much for blogging more frequently - there really isn't enough time in the day. Let's get up to date on how things are going here:<br />
<br />
<b>Kitties </b>- we will start here because there is not much to say. Kitties are all doing well - they seem happy and healthy and all is right in the feline world.<br />
<br />
<b>Piggers </b>- Winston is doing great. He is on a really good schedule and has gotten over being pissed off that the puppies came home. He spent a couple of weeks issuing me special piggy memos letting me know that he was unhappy. That has finally calmed down and he is doing well. He spends a good bit of time outdoors. For the most part he is out by himself - although there have been a few times he is out at the same time as one of the girl pups. I have not had him outside with Tango - although there have been some cases of incidental/accidental contact that have occurred with no aggression from either party.<br />
<br />
<b>Emma </b>- the old girl is doing well - she is a bit senile, a bit deaf, a bit blind and a bit annoying at times but she keeps going strong. She's 15 now and we pretty much let her do her thing. She is happy the pups are back!<br />
<br />
<b>Pups </b>- they are adjusting quite well to being home under a new set of rules. Pup parents are still going to school - I think a few more lessons left. They are much improved dogs I must say and I am enjoying spending time every day with them one on one. I am quite please with their progress. It's interesting - Juliett is the worrier - she stresses out - wants to do it right and hates being in trouble. Tango is the stubborn one - the boundary tester who likes to see what he can get away with before he gets in trouble. And Charli - she was my difficult child before we went to training - she has blossomed. She loves the structure and is really thriving having new rules - never would have guessed....<br />
<br />
<b>Ferrets </b>- the crazy little business is doing just great! Violet continues to do well - her weight, appetite, energy, level of engagement - they are all fantastic. Kai is a bit thinner than I would like - I believe this to be related to his coat change. Male ferrets can lose up to 30% of their body weight with changing from winter to summer coat. With a ferret like Bash who is quite stocky its not as noticeable but with a long, lean ferret like Kai - he looks thinner for sure. His appetite, energy levels, etc are all fine but I have been supplementing his food a few times a day. All the ferrets LOVE to eat from the syringe (something I taught them when Harlow - our FIP ferret was ill a few years ago). So - I make up some gravy and give Kai a supplemental feeding a few times a day. I also give some to Violet as its good from a blood sugar perspective for her to eat often. And - then I have to share with each of the other ferrets - they all take turns getting a little taste from the syringe. Mind you - if I dump the gravy into their bowl - no interest. They are so silly.<br />
<br />
The exotic vet comes for a house call on the 27th. I will have him give Kai a good once over to be sure he is fine. Winston will also get his annual stuff done - vaccines, physical, annual blood draw, tusk trim, hoof trim - its stressful for him and for me...but it has to happen... The ferrets will get their updated adrenal disease prevention implants - all but Madison who already had hers updated a few months ago.<br />
<br />
That's it from here - maybe some camera trap pics and some critter pics as well in the next week or so....Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6381128997918866568.post-67406388418093039292018-05-26T17:55:00.001-04:002018-05-26T17:55:49.702-04:00The Beautiful TurkeysOne of the favorite wildlife visitors around here are the turkeys. We have three males and several females that pass through. They are here for a week or two and then we don't see them for a week or two and then they are back. I love seeing them:<br />

Oh my goodness - I am so happy that my little zoo is complete once again. We picked up the puppies from school this morning and I am thrilled to have them home. This first week is going to be tough with trying to acclimate them back into our environment under a who new set of rules. Here are the primary focuses we have for the next week:<br />
<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>No paws on people, no paws on stuff - this means no jumping, scratching at the door, getting on the furniture, etc.</li>
<li>No teeth on people (play biting) and no teeth on stuff that is not theirs - this means no chewing up shoes, paper, etc.</li>
<li>Dogs under human control at all times - this means on a leash or in a crate 100% of the time this week - ugh.</li>
<li>CALM - the theme of the week is calm - don't stir them up - don't talk to them in a crazy, excited 'dog voice', don't yell at them - just conversational corrections and interactions.</li>
</ol>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So - I didn't love the idea of that much crate time so luckily the kitchen is large enough that we can have three 'dog stations'. Each gets a dog bed, toys, a bone, a water bowl. They are connected to a leash that is connected to something stationary. For instance - Juliett's leash is hooked to the leg of the kitchen table. They are far enough apart they can see each other but cannot interact. So far it has gone well.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In addition, I am keen to get them better at going in the car so I have decided that my Starbucks run will have a dog in tow each time. Today I took Charli (because she hates the car the most). She did okay, she did not get in trouble for being afraid and the return trip was much calmer than the way there. We will keep working on it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
All in all - the change in the dogs is remarkable. They are much more calm. They were always fairly mellow, but they are calm as well. Their leash manners are amazing - they had none when we started as we were terrible and never leash trained them. Obedience has vastly improved. If you tell them to do something or stop doing something they listen. Now, there are still times they need corrected and they are only three weeks in to training so its not perfect but its great.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
All in all - so far so good. Thankfully I have a long weekend and can spend a good bit of time doing dog things over the next few days. In the next 7 - 10 days we will head back to training center with all three pups to do another session and expand the scope of their world slowly but surely. By August - they should have a good amount of freedom and be in the beginning stages of maintenance mode.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Emma is thrilled they are home. Winston hasn't seen them yet - that is a few weeks away....</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I will keep posting as we make progress - I will try to get some pictures over the weekend as well. Happy Friday!!<br />

Gosh - its been forever since I blogged. I needed a bit of a hiatus I guess. This is the longest I have gone without blogging since I started in 2011.<br />
<br />
Lots and not a lot has been happening around here. The humans have been far too busy as of late. The critters have been pretty status quo.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Emma is doing well. Having an older dog definitely has some challenges but we are fortunate that she is in good health and going strong.</li>
<li>As you probably know - the puppies (who aren't really puppies anymore - can you believe that they will be two in September?) are off to school. They come home on Friday, the 25th of May. I can't wait to get them home - I have missed them so much!!</li>
<li>Winston the pig is enjoying his dog vacation. He is doing fantastic - loving the warmer weather and the time outside.</li>
<li>Violet - the insulinoma ferret continues to do well! She is bright, happy and active.</li>
<li>The rest of the ferret gang are all doing just great. They are all in the process of losing their winter coat and blubber and thinning out with less weight and thinner hair. All of them are full of energy.</li>
<li>The kitties are all doing just great as well. Aggie continues to do well at 22. Oliver and Phoebe seem to be quite stable on the hyperthyroid front and they are all happy and engaged and enjoying some time in the sun in their outside playspace.</li>
</ul>
<br />
I haven't checked the camera traps in a bit so I will make my way down there and find some good shots to share with you guys in the coming days. Additionally - I will provide a full report on what it's like with pups once we get them home.<br />
<br />
June is busy - parties, visitors, vet visits for the pig and the ferrets - whew - there is always so much on the plate.<br />
<br />
Hopefully I can get back on a more regular blogging schedule as well...fingers crossed!! Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6381128997918866568.post-10483654684137984662018-03-11T13:07:00.000-04:002018-03-11T13:07:44.765-04:00Weekend in ReviewIt's been a good weekend so far. Midday on Sunday and I just got done running errands. I am pleased to report that I can leave the puppies unattended for short stints now without them tearing things up or getting into things they shouldn't. In fact, when I got home today, I returned to find Charli and Juliett sound asleep in their crates which was totally voluntary as they were snoozing on the bed when I left. Tango and Emma were napping on the bedroom floor. Nothing out of place - such good dogs. I got them new toys at Costco and they seem to be a hit - all three are playing away as I type. They also got new banana peanut butter cookies which Winston has taste tested and approved.<br />
<br />
Everyone seems happy and healthy. Violet continues to do well and Oliver is lively and ornery as ever - showing no signs of anything being amiss. Winston is a happy piggy in that we have had much nicer weather and he is spending the bulk of his days outside. Today - not so much - its raining. He did go out for a bit and get some grazing in before it started to sprinkle. The rest of the ferrets and kitties are well. This week I hope to tackle some spring cleaning in their rooms - getting rid of old, torn up toys, doing a deep clean to include windows, baseboards, etc and rearranging their rooms - they do love it when things are a bit different than the same old thing.<br />
<br />
Next up for vet visits will be Charli and Tango next month - I haven't scheduled them yet. Then we will get the home visit for Winston and the ferrets - everyone but Madison needs their adrenal disease prevention pellet updated. Since she has active adrenal disease she already got hers updated a couple of months ago. Then it will be time for a checkup for Aggie and Emma - it never stops!<br />
<br />
I never posted the camera trap photos from the past week - there was one bird pic and a BUNCH of deer photos - they are prolific this time of year. I will only post the good ones. It's also been windy - I the camera captured the windy leaves in kind of a cool shot - I will post that one as well. While I am in critterland this week I will try to take some shots of the kitties and ferrets and post them as well.<br />

<br />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6381128997918866568.post-89015765998660300312018-03-07T10:19:00.004-05:002018-03-07T10:19:44.785-05:00Vet Visits and Other StuffAs I type - Charli is barking wildly at the ferrets who are playing in their room - she watches them through the sliding glass door and wants to play so bad. They are all chasing each other through the dryer tube having a grand time. Winston is 'bitching' at his bedroom door - he wants to be outside but it's rainy. The puppies are outside - they don't care if it rains - in fact, I think they kind of enjoy it.<br />
<br />
This week has been crazy so far for the humans. Phoebe and Oliver had their every six-month vet visit on Monday. We did all the regular stuff - physical, fecal, blood work, etc. Both of them look pretty good considering that Ollie will be 16 and Phoebe will be 13 (my zoo is getting old). We didn't get the bloodwork results back until yesterday. <br />
<br />
Phoebe is perfect - not one number out of whack. Her thyroid number was perfect - no need to adjust her medications and we got her prescription renewed. Oliver wasn't quite perfect - but nothing was too whacky. His white blood cell count was one digit outside of normal. Last time he was at the top of the range so its basically no change and the vet wasn't all that concerned. His BUN number was elevated - top of the normal range is 37 - he was 41. BUN is associated with the kidneys and can indicate the start of kidney disease when elevated - but - his Creatinine was low - 0.9 is the start of the normal range and Ollie was 0.8. So - since both kidney numbers were not elevated - it's likely not kidney disease. His calcium number was also slightly elevated - 11.2 was the top of normal and he was 11.5. There is a second calcium test we can do to get more details. I will take Oliver along in April when I take Tango and Charli in for their annual stuff and they can do a quick blood draw. Until then we are going to watch him closely. Inflated calcium can be a sign of something more serious - but typically the number would be much higher than .3 above normal if we had something icky going on.<br />
<br />
In the meantime - we are going to keep Ollie from stealing the ferret's raw diet cat food because it is very high in calcium and just keep an eye on him and make sure he is not showing any signs of illness. At the moment his is his same ornery, active self.<br />
<br />
Here are a few pics from the vet:<br />

That's about it from here - I feel like this week has been 17 days long already...happy hump day!<br />

February was a pretty good critter month. Violet is well - as are all the little ferrets - crazy little bunch. Kitties seem to be doing pretty well. Piglet seems happy and healthy. The puppies are well - we did have the lump on Juliett's head - which turned out to be a hematoma. It's much smaller, albeit still present, but getting better. Healthwise - we are good to go I think.<br />
<br />
We also had the dog on pig violence incident. Tango went after Winston in the house. Since then we have had no issues. Of course - they have not had much opportunity to have another incident. They are on super lockdown and closer than every supervision.<br />
<br />
We set up the camera traps in February and are really enjoying the results.<br />
<br />
Looking forward to March - the kitties go to the vet on Monday. I would also like to get Tango and Charli in for their annual stuff (Juliett's was done when she got checked out for the lump).<br />
<br />
Here are the latest pics from the camera traps - I still think that is a fox and not a coyote - based on the blogs I have checked out and of course - the deer...<br />
