Presents for the Ferrets

The pups and the pig get new toys and treats frequently but the kitties and the ferrets rarely do.  I was at Costco this morning and happened upon these cute little items and got them for the ferrets. Guessing the kitties will likely enjoy them too...

They are like sleeping bags, which the little ones love.  I put the alligator in their bedroom and the mermaid tail in my office.  Tabby and Kai were up and about and all too happy to check things out.

I love this shot of Kai - handsome little devil

It's Official - We Need a Trainer

Today I officially reached out to a local dog trainer for her to come to the house and try to tame the wild puppies.  The are good dogs for the most part but they need to learn some manners and some obedience.  I have asked her to structure a training plan around the following:

  • Barking - they bark at each other mostly but its noisy and annoying
  • Jumping up - particularly Charli - she is by far the worst of the three
  • Being a bit more gentle with Emma - they love her so much but they are too exuberant for the old girl
  • General commands - they do sit for cookies, and go in their crates for chewies but we need to work on things like stay, settle, lay down, etc
  • Listening when excited or distracted - all bets are off currently
I hope to hear back from her this week so we can get something on the calendar and get these babies calmed down a bit.  Puppy brains in giant dog bodies make for a challenging time.  Add to that - three of them - we are outnumbered.  I'll keep you posted on how it goes...

In General

In general things here are the zoo are good.  The weather is miserable - way to hot for anybody - critter or human to be out and about.  As I type this the pig is napping under the fan I set up in his room (no, he's not spoiled), the puppies are wrestling and playing with toys in the living room, Emma is napping on our bed, the kitties are sprawled out in various spots in critterland - as are the ferrets - not a creature is stirring down there.  Today the heat index could reach 110 - ugh.

The ferrets are all doing great.  I need to pull Miss Violet into the guest room around 3 so she can fast for 3 hours and then do a glucose test on her.  I am pretty sure her number is okay as she has been a spitfire the last few days.  The kitties are all doing well - you saw they had their vet visit yesterday.  Aggie seems to really like the new kidney friendly cat food - which is great because she can be a bit finicky!

The puppies are doing well.  It's challenging having puppy brains in full sized dog bodies - makes for chaos.  I finally got around to shaving the girls so everyone is 'naked' now - just in time for the scorching weather!  Juliett was so well behaved for her haircut - Charli - well, that's another story - I am trying to block it from my mind.  :)  Emma is doing well - she seems happy and active.

And - Mr. Piggy - he is great!  He has been pretty well behaved lately.  He seems quite happy so long as his days are relatively the same from a schedule perspective.

We were lucky today - piggy and pups let us sleep in til 8:30.  They would have let us sleep later I think - I decided to get them up.

All in all - things here are great.  Will be happy when it cools a bit and everyone can go back outside where they prefer to be.....

Three Kitty Vet Visit

Holy Moly!  It's been forever since I blogged.  Guess I needed a summer vacation.  Today was a busy day as all three kitties had their semi annual vet visit.  They go every 6 months since Oliver and Phoebe need monitoring for their thyroid levels and Aggie - well - she is just plain old.   She turns the ripe old age of 20 this year - WOW!  I thought it was only 19 but I was mistaken.....denial I guess.

The results overall are pretty darn good considering they are all technically considered senior citizens.  (20, 15 and 11 years old).

Let's start with Aggie:

Her physical went well - eyes, ears, teeth, heart, skin, etc were all in good shape.  Her weight was down almost a pound from last time - she weighs7.14 pounds.  This is good as she was just a bit of a pudge the last time at over 9 pounds.  Her bloodwork looks pretty good.  There is only one area of concern which is around her kidney numbers.  They were a tiny bit inflated last October indicating the start of kidney disease and they are just a tiny bit more inflated this time.  The vet has put her on a supplement called Azodyl which I ordered for her today.  We also decided to try out a more kidney friendly diet so Aggie will be testing out a medicated cat food over the next few days to see if she likes it.  Aggie also got her FVRCP (distemper) booster.

Mr. Oliver:

Ollie's physical went well - he still has cruddy teeth - no surprise - but everything else looked good. The vet was kind enough to give me a new tube of ophthalmic ointment for Oliver's squinty eye he sometimes gets.  In regards to his bloodwork - everything looked great with the exception of his thyroid number which is a bit inflated.  We did a minor adjustment on his thyroid med dosage and that should fix him right up.  He is still my skinny mini - topping the scales at 5.3 pounds but the vet did say his body condition is good.  Hopefully with fixing his thyroid number he can gain a bit more weight.  Ollie also had his rabies booster.

Last but not least - Miss Phoebe:

Her physical went very well - a healthy girl.  And - her bloodwork is perfect - all her numbers including her thyroid number were in the normal range.  Woot!  She gained a bit of weight since last time - weighing in at 9.9 pounds.  All in all she is a very healthy cat.  She also had her FVRCP (distemper) and her rabies booster as well.

All in all it was a good visit.  The kitties were great in the car and were very well behaved and cooperative for the vet and the vet techs.  These guys are good to go til February or so of next year.

You can barely see Aggie - she is on the left, Ollie in the middle and Phoebe on the right
Aggie and Oliver - its the only time these two are friends - when they feel like they are safer together than apart

Violet

My sweet Violet - she is doing so fantastic!  We do her next glucose test on the 12th but my guess is she is still good to go.  Take a look at a few snaps and a video of her playing in her ball pit....

Happy Birthday Tabitha and Kai!! Three Years Old Today

July is a busy month for us - Winston turned 3 on the 3rd and Tabby and Kai turn 3 today.  I can't believe these two little stinkers are already three years old!

Kai is still my wild child - he likes to climb up your pantlegs, try to remove your toenails and he loves to play rough and tumble.  On the flip side he is incredibly affectionate and will give you lots of kisses right under your nose.

Tabitha - my independent girl.  She will let you pick her up and love on her but it is not her favorite thing for sure.  She is my helper - she loves to help with chores - standing in the litter boxes while I scoop, standing in the way while I vacuum and mop and following me close as I do my chores each morning and evening.

They have had some treats (ferret chew sticks and ferretone) for their birthday and some extra love and attention this morning.

I would be remiss if I didn't wish a heavenly happy birthday to Kai and Tabby's litter mate Harlow. We miss this little ginger girl so much and think of her every day.  I hope she is having a giant birthday blowout at the Rainbow Bridge.

Puppy Pool Party

The pups are doing well with learning the pool - how to get in and out - and they are getting much more comfortable with swimming in general.  Juliett is by far the best swimmer of the three.  She loves it and when we let her out in the mornings she makes a bee line for the pool to go for a swim. Tango is next - he swims fairly well and will occasionally get in on his own.  He loves to swim with his daddy and won't leave the pool when the hubs is in there.  Charli is still a bit apprehensive - she will get in on the top step and some days on the second step but unless there is a human in the pool she won't go in for an actual swim.  I love that they are learning that it really cools them off on a hot afternoon.  I also love that it totally wears them out!
