I stumbled upon our Hawaii vacation pictures on the old hard drive and came across these snaps. We drove to the southern part of the island of Kauai to see some limestone rock feature we read about in a book. As we rounded a bend in the beach my husband stopped and quickly told me not to go that way. He saw a seal on the beach with a yellow tape perimeter around it to protect it. He thought it was dead and didn't want me to see it. Thankfully that was not the case at all - it was a family of monk seals snoozing on the beach. They are endangered - about 1200 of them still around. In Hawaii they protect them and let them rest by stringing the tape around them and keeping crazy tourists away.
The first seal we came upon was the dad, a bit further down the beach was the mom and then we were treated to such a surprise - a baby seal frolicking on the beach. We watched them forever - it was truly my very favorite part of the Hawaii trip and my favorite critter encounter on a vacation:
