Caution - Toxic
Nigel needs a varied diet - so I often find myself online looking at the list of foods that are safe for him. I thought it might be interesting to look at what's on the toxic list for all my guys and compile it into one post that will be easy to access:
Some things that are toxic to hedgehogs:
Tea Tree Oil - both the oil and anything like shampoo or conditioner that contains the oil
Grapes and Raisins
Avocados
Ivermectin - this is a medication they use to treat mites in hedgehogs. Evidently there is much risk associated with its use and it is recommended that you choose another med called Revolution instead.
Nuts and seeds - not all that toxic from and internal perspective but they can get caught in the roof of the mouth and some hedgies cause themselves eye damage scratching at their faces to try to get it loose.
Chocolate
Dairy - although - it is safe to give very small quantities of yogurt once in awhile - they bacteria replenishes the hedgehog system.
Neosporin
Things that are toxic to ferrets:
Dairy - although goat's milk and cottage cheese seem to be okay
Chocolate
Licorice - we have had an episode with licorice - ugh
Corn
Onions
Castorbean plant
Hemlock
Wild Cherries
Milkweed
For the pup:
Chocolate
Onions
Mushrooms
Grapes in high quantities
Macadamia Nuts
Bones
Fat trimmings
Raw eggs
Raw fish
Poinsettia
Easter Lilly
And last but not least - for the kitties:
People medication - Naproxin, Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen
Over use of flea and tick meds
Chocolate
Onion
Garlic
Chives
Rat or mouse poison
Lillies
Azaleas
Tulips
Daffodils
Palms
Chemicals such as antifreeze, household cleaners and fertilizers
