My little Finney had to pop into the vet today. You see - we have been in an all at war with the fleas this fall and while I think we might be starting to win, it seems that little Mr. Finnegan has a sensitivity to fleas that make him itch, itch, itch....poor guy.
He has all sorts of places where he has scratched until he bleeds and you can see a general redness in his skin showing just how irritated it is. In addition - the ferret equivalent to long flowing locks like McDreamy has started to lose some hair as a result. So - off to the vet we went.
Dr. M confirmed - yep - its flea related. He gave him a steroid/anti inflammatory shot to help his skin to feel better. He also put him on an oral antibiotic for the next 10 days to get the skin infection all fixed up. He also checked Finn's ears and discovered an ear mite and some lovely ear mite eggs. They let me look under the microscope - talk about sci fi - UGH. So, he got an antibiotic injection to kill the mites as well. Finn did well - he was very cooperative and unlike last time we did the vet visit, he was willing to get down and check the place out.
The good news is - he is already feeling better - not scratching nearly as much and his happy to be home. The bad news is - mites are likely hiding out eating ferret ear wax and laying eggs in my other babies ears as I type this. Needless to say - the other four ferrets and the hedgehog are going to the vet tomorrow to get checked out. I saw what that creature in Finn's ear looked like - not gonna wait for sure....
On the flea front - bombs have gone off in multiple rooms - carpets have been treated, vacuum has crystals in the canister that kill any live bugs that get sucked up, flea traps are in use and Frontline has been applied to everyone (except Nigel) and Emma had her Trifexis. I will win.... :)
